Campus Murals

For the past 20 years Konawaena art students have been painting murals on campus and throughout the South Kona community.

Hawaii Governor David Ige helps paint the mural with artist Martin Charlot.
The recently renovated mural honoring the legacy of Col. Ellison Onizuka was completed in the spring  of 2020, painted by Martin Charlot.

Aloha Mural
​

The Aloha mural was finally completed in the winter of 2022. The pandemic halted the painting which was designed by former student Anthony under the direction of Michelle Obregon, art instructor.

Water Warrior Mural

Konawaena HS invites you to take a selfie in front of the schools first interactive mural on campus. Located in front of the pool, the mirrored waves gives everyone a chance to be part of the mana of the ocean without getting wet!

1001 Origami Crane Peace Mural

Goal: To create 1001 ceramic tiles with images of origami cranes and messages of good will. The finished mural will be a reminder to promote peace in our community.
In April 2016, youth started painting their individual tiles with messages of good will. One of the three main murals was installed in May of 2016, which symbolized family. In 2017 the second main mural was installed, symbolizing community, and in the spring of 2018 self was displayed. 
​As of winter 2022, 970 crane tiles of been painted and displayed. 
​

The Mural depicts part of Ellison's keynote commencement speech he delivered to the class of 1980 at Konawaena HS. The mural will be complete in September 2017.
