Konawaena High School AP Course Guidelines SY 2024-2025

Overview
​
What follows are the expectations for students and teachers who wish to participate in the Advanced Placement program at Konawaena High School and supports the school will provide. It includes information on course requirements, resources, teacher and student expectations, and assessments. The goal of the requirements listed is to ensure consistency in quality instruction across courses by establishing clear standards for all Advanced Placement teachers and students.
​Student and Teacher Expectations
​
Students should:
  • Prepare for a rigorous academic experience
  • Be willing to work hard, keep current with assignments, and stay organized
  • Be proactive and seek help when needed
  • Stay positive, engaged, and motivated
  • Committed to taking the corresponding AP exam if they wish to remain in the course
Teachers should:
  • Ensure students have a deep understanding of the AP course content by presenting material clearly and effectively, providing opportunities for practice and reinforcement, and offering support and guidance as needed.
  • Focus on developing course specific skills through various activities, assignments, and discussions in the classroom.
  • Provide guidance and strategies to help students manage their time effectively, including setting priorities, creating schedules, and balancing academic and personal commitments.
  • Prepare students for the AP exam through review sessions that help students become familiar with the exam format and content, as well as exam-taking strategies and techniques to enhance student confidence and performance.
  • Provide regular, timely, and constructive feedback for student growth on assignments, projects, and exams to help students identify areas for improvement and reinforce their strengths.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents/guardians to discuss progress, address concerns, and provide support, as well as encourage collaboration and peer learning among students to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Commit to continuous professional development to stay up-to-date with the latest teaching methodologies, curriculum changes, and assessment practices in order to provide the best possible education and support to students.
Resources and Supports

The school shall provide the necessary resources to support AP courses, including the following:
  • Textbooks and other instructional materials
  • Access to online resources
  • Professional development opportunities for teachers
  • Information on summer institutes, workshops, and other learning opportunities provided in a timely manner
  • Trained proctors and certified exam rooms to ensure standardized testing conditions
​The school shall provide support to students who are taking AP courses, including the following:
  • Timely grading and meaningful feedback from teachers 
  • Frequent practice exams
  • Guidance/College and Career counseling
  • Financial assistance: All exams will be paid for by school
Course Evaluation
​
The school shall assess the effectiveness of its AP program on a regular basis. This assessment shall include but not be limited to the following:
  • Student exam performance data (to be shared without judgment with admin and faculty)
  • Teacher feedback (Survey to be delivered by AP Coordinator)
  • Student feedback (AP Class Google Form available here)
