How the Peer Education Program Works

*Students provide positive education and support to their peers regarding specific health issues and problem areas.

*They share information in creative ways(songs, skits, energizers, etc.),help develop a positive self-care. Positive peer pressure is the key.

*The Peer Educators represent a cross section of the school population(traditional school leaders,as well as other students with leadership potential).

*Students who become peer educators not only learn about health issues, but also learn who the community resource people are and how to be a "natural helper" in the school. They serve as a freindly listening ear for their peers and are trained to spot risky situations and refer students to the appropriate resource. They do not provide counceling nor do they replace the need for trained professional. They are seen as the first line of contact for students.
