Konawaena High School
Academic and Financial Plan
SY06-07

School Vision
Through a collaborative process in preparing for our most recent accreditation visit (SY 2004-2005), Konawaena High School continues to adopt the state’s vision of a high school graduate as its own. “All Konawaena High School graduates will Realize their goals and aspirations, Have attitudes, knowledge and skills to compete positively in a global society, Be able to exercise their rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and Pursue post-secondary education or careers without the need for remediation.”

Who we are
Konawaena High School is a one of two comprehensive high schools serving West Hawaii. It serves an ethnically and socio-economically diverse population. Routinely 40% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Konawaena offers a comprehensive academic program, special education and support services, vocational studies and a full complement of co-curricular activities and athletics.

What we have learned from our data
Konawaena High School completed a full accreditation visitation at the end of last school year. Review of school-level, HSA, SWIS, and other data revealed several need areas. As a note, a full summary of findings may be found in the WASC final report. Need areas are also mirrored in our most recent Trend Report (attached).
HSA results show a plateau of scores in both math and reading over the past three years. The reports also show that nearly one out of every three ninth graders do not earn the requisite number of credits to be classified as tenth graders. Behavior data shows a promising reduction in the total number of office referrals over the past two years, however ninth graders still account for an overwhelming majority of them.

What we are going to do in SY06-07
Briefly, the school will continue to focus on standards-based education and increasing academic rigor in all classrooms. There will be particular attention paid to standards-based assessment in preparation for the standards based report card.
The school will focus on improving ninth grade academic success and credit accrual by dedicating a team of teachers (with common meeting times) to begin implementation of a ninth grade house/academy model. Four-year academic plans will also be developed for each incoming freshman. Eighth to ninth grade transition will be addressed with the assistance of our feeder middle school.
In addition, the school will focus on implementing a school-wide character education program (with particular attention on ninth graders) through the purchased GO program and a district-supported bully prevention program from the World Youth Network organization.
