Course Descriptions:
Basic Keyboarding
Basic Keyboarding introduces touch-operating skills to keyboard characters and the proper manipulation of operating parts of the computer and or/ typewriter. Students learning keyboarding at a computer should also be provided with instruction in the touch method of the ten-key pad, if available. Techniques, speed, and accuracy will be emphasized. The course develops basic skills in keyboarding for personal use or further study and work in the academic and business world. The following topics are included in the course: producing personal and business letters and envelopes, reports, and tables; speed and accuracy drills; and touch keyboarding techniques. Students who have not had instruction in keyboarding should enroll in this course. This course is repeatable. A student can receive a maximum of two semester credits.
Note Taking and Study Skills
Note taking helps students to learn and remember more effectively by making meaningful and useful notes while reading and listening. The student learns: (1) a rapid writing system of note taking for personal use; (2) how to listen, read and study by note taking; (3) how to organize notes as they are being taken; and (4) how to take notes at discussions, meetings and conferences, for research papers, and in reviewing and preparing for examinations.
Business Communication
Business Communication is a course that is designed to help the student understand and appreciate the importance of effective communication in business situations and environments. Effective communication techniques will help the student enter, compete, and advance in the world of work. Emphasis will be placed on the application of all phases of communications: speaking, listening, thinking, responding, reading, writing, communicating non-verbally, and utilizing technology for communication. Business communication functions, processes, and applications in the context of business will be practiced through problem-based projects and real world application. In addition, students will also develop knowledge, skills and abilities in such areas as teaming, problem-solving, facilitative leadership, etc.
Beginning Accounting
Beginning Accounting emphasizes accounting principles as they relate to the basic understanding and skill required to keep manual and computerized financial records for a business. Emphasis is on providing students with entry-level skills for the accounting profession and/or preparation for further study in accounting.
Intro to Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is course designed to introduce students to the process of establishing a small business. Concepts introduced will be applied and practiced. Community mentors in related fields will assist students as they implement their chosen enterprises. In this way, students will be able to explore the unique relationships between business and the culture and values found in Hawaii today. Students will design, develop, and implement a business plan. They will manage all aspects of their own business and integrate technology-based business practices. Assessments and evaluations will be done in partnership with business and industry.
