KONAWAENA HIGH SCHOOL SAFETY COMMITTEE
OCTOBER 12, 2004

PRESENT:  Bill Bettencourt, Joyce Crisafi, Kip Yamamoto, Lyle Crozier, Jeff Hirai and Kevin Hunking

1. VESTS FOR STAFF:

Security and administration should have orange vests, and faculty/staff should have yellow vests for easy visual contact amongst students.  Specific times discussed were pick -up and drop off by buses and fire and emergency evacuation.

2. MEET MONTHLY:

We agreed to meet monthly and that our next meeting would be in two weeks due to upcoming inspections.

3. SCHOOL SAFETY INSPECTION AND FIRE INSPECTION:

Agreed that SSM would do a pre-fire inspection and that notification would be given to faculty and staff of areas that need to improve and also inspection date as soon as we know it.  School safety inspection will happen the second week of November.  We discussed priority of safety issues on campus and are top three priorities were:

a. BELLS – fire and evacuation bells did not work on some of our campus.  Kevin will follow up with copies of work orders and attempt to have it corrected.
b. BASKETBALL BASKETS (SAFETY STRAPS) – safety requires that our basketball hoops have a safety strap, which they do not have.  Lyle stated that he had put in a request.  Kevin to follow up with Karen about the requests.
c. STORAGE OF GAS AND FURNITURE – The Safety Committee is very concerned about the storage of fuel in an unauthorized room in C building.  Kevin to follow up on options for storage.  We also need to find additional storage space for furniture currently in several closed restrooms.  The restrooms are required to be opened by the state and if we do not clear them shortly, we will be in non-compliance.  One of the options put forth by the committee was to used the use the old bus by JROTC, remove the seats and put a fence around it as a temporary facility.

4. INFORM COUNTY ABOUT SAFETY ISSUES (SIDE OF THE ROAD):

Should we barricade this area?  Is it our responsibility or is it the county’s.  Kevin will follow up and have answer before Friday’s football game.

5. BUS PARKING STRIPED:

SSM requests to have the bus parking lot striped, he will follow up with Gordon and we will put in a request to DAGS for paint.
